From the moment Rose arrived on Gili Air, it felt like home. She has spent the past ten years there with her husband and two daughters. Several years ago, she founded Coral Catch, an organization dedicated to empowering local women through swimming, diving, and coral reef conservation and protection.

Rose Huizenga receives an award from Dr. Sylvia Earle for her outstanding contributions to marine conservation and gender equality. Winning this, Coral Catch will host the first Coral Catch Conference, a three-day event that aims to bring together women in marine science from across Southeast Asia.

Rose Huizenga and Coral Catch have been shortlisted as finalist on Blue Marine Foundation Ocean Awards Local Hero of the year. The Local Hero Award recognises the individual or group that has had the most positive impact on the marine environment within their local community. In this category, Coral Catch is listed as groups and organizations from around the world that are dedicated to restoring the health of our ocean.

Rose Huizenga, founder of Gili Shark Conservation and Coral Catch, is a dedicated marine conservation leader in Indonesia’s Gili Matra Marine Park. Starting as a dive instructor, she launched Gili Shark Conservation, a citizen science project. Her efforts led to Indonesia’s first white-tip shark nursery and an all-female coral restoration program.

Gender equality has a long way to go in parts of Indonesia, but scuba diving and marine conservation are helping to change that. Annie reports on the women of Coral Catch, a female-only coral restoration initiative that is inspiring Indonesian women into ocean science.

Empowering women to work in marine conservation field is one of the reason why Coral Catch exist. Featuring Cenna, a Coral Catch alumni that now embarks her new journey as Coral Catch Program Manager.

Fuelled by a dream to reduce the gender gap in marine science and actively protect our oceans, Rose started training local women from across Indonesia to set up their own coral restoration projects. The aim is clear: to build a strong network of female leaders protecting the reefs of Indonesia.

“Changing the world, one woman, one reef, one island at a time.” This powerful motto embodies the mission of an organization empowering women to safeguard and restore Indonesia’s coral reefs.
